Animals get blessed at community event

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

On Saturday, dozens of animals and their families lined up at the corner of Firetower Road and Arlington Boulevard in Greenville to receive a blessing.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church holds the “Blessing of the Animals” ceremony every fall.

The occasion usually happens close to the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, who was known for his love of all animals.

"Winston loves it every year. We love it more than he does. We're blessed to have him and we like him to get blessed also."

This year St. Paul expanded the blessing event to include a community fun day. The event featured music, inflatables for the kids, karaoke, raffles, and barbeque for sale.

All proceeds from the event go to the church outreach programs and activities.

------------------------------------------------------------------------previous story--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Greenville’s annual Blessing of the Animals event at St. Paul’s Episcopal will be expanded next month to encompass a “Community Fun Day.”

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will conduct its Blessing of the Animals Saturday, Oct. 5, at the corner of Arlington Boulevard and East Fire Tower Road, beginning at 11 a.m. As in years past, the church invites residents to bring their pets to be blessed in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi.

At the same time, a Community Fun Day will take place nearby, at Arlington and Turnbury Drive. The church will sponsor family entertainment with a disc jockey, face painting and free carnival-type games. A food tent will be in operation until 2 p.m., and tickets for a barbecue plate lunch at the food tent will cost $7. In addition, a draft beer tent also will dispense beer from the Duck Rabbit Brewery in Farmville. For $10, patrons can sample all beers, and a combination ticket for barbecue and beer will cost $15.

The church tells 9 On Your Side that all proceeds from the event will benefit various St. Paul’s outreach programs and activities.
