New deputy superintendent for Durham Public Schools named

DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham Public Schools announced Thursday that Dr. Stacey Wilson-Norman, who currently serves as area superintendent for elementary schools, will become the new deputy superintendent for academic services.

She begins her new role on Oct. 7.

Wilson-Norman has served Durham Public Schools since 2000. She first served in the county as principal of Merrick-Moore Elementary School, where she was recognized as the system's Principal of the Year in 2005, the school system said.

She then moved to a position in the central office in June 2005 before becoming area superintendent in July 2010.

"Stacey has been a valued and respected member of the DPS team for many years, and I am confident she will continue to encourage our administrators, staff and students to grow, reach higher, and perform better," said Superintendent Dr. Eric J.. Becoats. "This district has seen our graduation rate improve nearly 10 points in only four years. Now is not the time to rest – and Stacey is just the person to keep us moving forward."

She moves into this position after the role of chief of staff was restructured. Dr. Lewis Ferebee vacated that position earlier in September.

Wilson-Norman earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at North Carolina Central University. She earned her doctorate from Gardner-Webb University, the school system said.
