Dare County car break-in suspect found hiding in abandoned house

Posted: Updated:
CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. -

A stolen handgun was linked to a series of car break-ins on Hatteras Island.

After weeks of investigating, Dare County deputies charged 21-year-old Richard Taylor with the break-ins.

Taylor didn’t have a car. Detectives believe he stole bicycles to get around from house to house on the island. They say he mostly targeted unlocked cars, stealing everything from cash to a gun.

Taylor was on probation at the time of the break-ins. Deputies say he lived in an abandoned house on the island.

“When we came to the location we discovered several items that certainly did not belong to him that were likely stolen from vehicles or other people's property,” said Sgt. Doug Oberbeck, with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say it’s always a good idea to lock your car and keep an eye out for possible criminal activity in your neighborhood. If you see anything that doesn’t seem right, call the Dare County Sheriff’s Office.
