ECU Basketball loses Armstrong and Straughn

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Senior forward Ty Armstrong will not be returning to the East Carolina University men's basketball team for personal reasons and senior Erin Straughn, who missed the entire 2012-13 season due to injury, will transition into an undergraduate student assistant coaching role, head coach Jeff Lebo announced Friday.

Armstrong was the only player to start all 35 games for ECU last season, averaging 9.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest while ranking fourth in Conference USA in field goal percentage (.568). He was a key contributor in the Pirates' CIT championship run, averaging 11.6 points during the five-game tournament.

Armstrong was a member of the ECU program for just one year after spending his freshman and sophomore seasons at Auburn.

"Ty was an important part of our success last season and we were looking forward to him contributing even more this year," Lebo said. "We wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Straughn was a three-year letterman for the Pirates from 2009-12, starting 70 of 94 games and averaging 4.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

As a sophomore in 2010-11, he was instrumental in helping the Pirates record their first winning season in 15 years and earn their first postseason tournament invitation since 1993.

"It's very unfortunate that Erin won't be able to compete with us this season after courageously going through the rehabilitation process," Lebo said. "I'm thrilled he will be remaining a part of the Pirate basketball family as he joins our staff and continues to pursue his degree."

Straughn is on track to receive his bachelor of science in exercise and sport science this spring.
