DURHAM, N.C. -

Google will bring its highly buzzed Glass project to the American Tobacco Campus on Oct. 5, giving the public a chance to get its hands on the innovative new technology.

The Google Glass trial event will be held at Bay 7 of the American Tobacco Campus from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Google Glass is a hands-free computer device encased in a titanium eyeglass frame. The glasses allow users to access on-the-go maps, voice searches, video calls and photo sharing.

The company says Glass is a liberating breakthrough that will make technology more convenient and less obnoxious in social situations than checking a smartphone to see what's happening in your digital realm.

"Our vision behind Glass is to put you back in control of your technology by giving you a simple, elegantly designed hands-free device that's on only when you need it and off when you don't," Google explained.

Since May, 10,000 so-called "Glass Explorers" have been invited to try Google Glass and develop apps for the technology. Only 40 people in North Carolina were selected to be part of the trial program.

The Durham event is one of the first times there has been an open, public event for consumers to try the glasses. Google offers three basecamps -- in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles -- to teach people how use Glass and have their questions answered by experts.

"The selection of North Carolina's Research Triangle Park region adds to its reputation for innovation and entrepreneurship," Google said.

The announcement comes as the company announced earlier this week that the American Underground at the Tobacco Campus had been selected as one of seven Google for Entrepreneurs Tech Hubs around the United States and Canada.

A Google for Entrepreneurs Tech Hub means direct access to Google developers, early access to Google products and mentoring opportunities.
