SALEM -

Salem Police are investigating an armed robbery that took place at a 7/11 early this morning.

Officials got the call at 1:08 a.m. of an armed robbery at the 7/11 at 2035 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem.

When officers arrived, an employee stated that the suspect had fled on foot toward Roanoke City, and that the suspect demanded cash and may have had a weapon.

A short time later, a suspect -- later identified as James Edward Merit Jr. -- was located by Officer Blackwell in the 900 block of Citadel Lane near the robbery location. Merit was taken into custody, and several pieces of evidence were recovered around the area. He was jailed with no bond, pending an arraignment.
