TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

With a potential Federal Government shutdown looming, federal employees in Tampa Bay area are preparing.

Sheryl Loesch is the Clerk of Court in the middle district of Florida, based in Orlando.  Loesch says if there is a government shutdown the judiciary has the funds to keep the courts running for 10 business days, through Oct. 15.

Loesch says during that time the courts would be very careful about non-essential expenditures. If there is a government shutdown Loesch says trials would still go on and the clerks office would remain open.

Loesch says the Chief judge in the middle district of Florida has the authority to designate essential employees who would remain at work even if there is a shutdown.

Loesch says if the shutdown lasts longer than 10 days, essential employees would keep working without pay and jurors would still be required to attend trials, although their reimbursements would be delayed until a funding bill is worked out in congress.

Loesch says because of sequestration, staffing levels are already very lean and she would expect the chief judge would designate all employees of the Federal Courts to keep working.

A spokesperson for MacDill Air Force Base says," MacDill would be affected just like every other military installation around the world."

Terry Montrose is the deputy chief of public affairs at MacDill. Montrose says, "We expect to see reduced service levels to include: Our family readiness programs, education and training programs and medical programs."
Montrose goes on to say, "The government shutdown will have a lasting impact on our families and service men and women, but should not hinder existing operations."
