RUSSELL COUNTY, VA (WJHL) -

Russell County Public Schools told News Channel 11 a total of 5 students were injured after a Castlewood school bus overturned early Monday morning.  Meanwhile, the bus driver is facing reckless driving charges.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Route 671, about half a mile from Route 58.

Virginia State Police say the bus was traveling north on Route 671 when it ran off the left side of the gravel road. The bus, we are told, went down a slight embankment and overturned onto its side.

A total 11 elementary, middle and high school students were on the Castlewood school bus.

Three students and the driver were taken from the scene of the accident to the Russell County Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries. The students injured included a 15-year-old girl and two boys, ages 14 and 17.

Russell County Public Schools also told News Channel 11 two others were brought to the hospital later on. Four people have been treated and two others remain in the hospital at this time.

The driver, Robert Trent Jr. , 63 of St. Paul, VA has been charged with reckless driving. Police told News Channel 11 that speed was not a factor in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
