Chief Deputy Secretary Trogdon to Retire From NCDOT

RALEIGH, N.C. -

After nearly two decades of public service with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Chief Deputy Secretary of Operations Jim Trogdon announced he will retire from state government effective November 1st to work in the private sector. Trogdon has accepted a position as a Vice President at Atkins, a private consultant company that specializes in design, engineering and project management.

"I want to thank Jim for his selfless service to our department as a professional engineer and to our state as a National Guard soldier. I am personally grateful to Jim for all he did every day to make NCDOT the very best it can be," said NCDOT Sec. Tony Tata. "We recognize that it is challenging to retain some of our most talented public servants when private industry can be more competitive. We wish Jim and his family the very best in their next endeavor."

The NCDOT tells 9 On Your Side Trogdon worked as a DOT field engineer and served in other leadership capacities before being named chief operations officer in 2009. He helped drive several major initiatives over the years including reshaping the department’s funding formula to a more data driven approach that will create more jobs and make better use of existing funds during the 2013 legislative session.

"I am proud of our team, the work I got to do at NCDOT, and the changes we made to better serve the people of North Carolina. In the last year alone we've streamlined a funding formula that hadn't been changed in 25 years, and resolved a major legal hurdle to replace the much needed Bonner Bridge along the Outer Banks," said Jim Trogdon. "I want to thank Sec. Tata for his leadership and support. This was a difficult decision, but at the end of the day I was offered an opportunity for my career and family that was too good to pass up."

Trogdon's last day with NCDOT is October 31st. The Department will name an interim Chief of Operations at a later date.
