Missing college student identified as drowning victim

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - A body found in an Elizabeth City canal has been identified as 22-year-old missing Elizabeth City State University student Terry M. Leathers II.

That’s according to the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Greenville.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as a drowning.

Lawmen investigating the disappearance of Leathers found some of his personal items on Tuesday near a canal by Pelican Point in Elizabeth City.
After a search, investigators turned up a Leathers’ body about 60 feet from the area of his personal items.

Leathers was from Roper, N.C., which is about 47 miles from Elizabeth City.
