Students arrested for fighting

Posted: Updated:
WINDSOR, N.C. -
Bullying in schools. In recent years it's gained national attention and a lot has been done to combat it, but there's still work to be done.

On Tuesday deputies in Bertie County arrested several kids for causing a fight. For two years the Watford family has dealt with bullying. On Tuesday deputies arrested their son G'meake for the fourth time. He says every time; a bully pushed him to react.

"They like to call names, and they like to fight, swing or push." G' meake and his cousin were among the crowd. They sustained cuts and bruises.

"They try to pick on the youngest. They try to get everyone involved because they know that we are going to protect each other."

Because of bullying G'meak says he was arrested 4 times.
"You say you do nothing to provoke them?" the reporter asked. "No I don't do anything to provoke them. I feel like they want me to get in trouble to seem like I'm provoking them." G'meake said.

Wednesday morning G'meake's mother got worried. She discovered several threats on Facebook.
One saying "when home coming gets here next week ima smash all them NEC n*****.
"It's a constant fear. I still worry because a bullet has no name." Tarvara Watford said.

Watford says this is not the first time she's brought this up to school and hasn't acted on it. "My son tells me, mom nothing ever happens."

District officials told 9 On Your Side they are very familiar with Watford's son. He has been suspended several times before.

"We will not tolerate bullying in public schools." Bertie County School Public Information Officer Ella Fields-Bunch said.

"I am not able to respond to specifics regarding any students in question. We take claims of harassment and bullying very seriously and respond to any in a timely manner."

The school district couldn't confirm if Tuesday's fight was directly related to bullying. However the sheriff's office is investigating the fight. If you experience bullying, the school has a hotline (252) 325-9502.

9 On Your Side called the Sheriff's Office for details on this case. They did not return our calls.
