Police dispose of device from the 70's found in Beaufort

Posted: Updated:
BEAUFORT, N.C. - Beaufort town employees made a strange discovery at the Beaufort Public Works office.

They were cleaning out an office when they found a suspicious package on top of a shelf.

When investigators arrived, they determined it was actually old police riot gear, including some CS gas canisters that were still in their original containers.

Beaufort Police Chief, Steve Lewis says his department hasn't used equipment like that for years.

“It appears to have been there for quite some time. There's quite a bit of dust on top of the ordinances so we're estimating early 80's, late 70's that the ordinances have been stored there,” said Chief Steve Lewis, Beaufort Police.

It's still a mystery how the box ended up at the public works office.

Police say there was no danger to the public or employees. They called in the SBI as a precaution.
