Griffin to challenge US Rep. Jones in NC primary

NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Walter Jones Jr. will have another Republican primary challenge next year from someone who says the eastern North Carolina congressman is too far to the left.

Taylor Griffin of New Bern announced Thursday he would seek the 3rd District seat Jones has held since 1995. Griffin grew up in Wilson and moved back to North Carolina recently after working in Washington and forming a public affairs firm. The 38-year-old touts previous service in the office of U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms.

Jones has faced previous primary challenges from candidates calling him too liberal. The one-time Democrat spoke out against the Iraq war and has bucked House Republican leaders on key votes.

Griffin said the most liberal House Republican "should come from San Francisco, not from eastern North Carolina."
