Shutdown costs Peaks of Otter Lodge employees their jobs

Posted: Updated:
BEDFORD COUNTY, VA -

As the shutdown showdown continues in Washington, we're learning more about the toll it's taking on people here in Southwest Virginia.

Delaware North Companies, which operates the Peaks of Otter Lodge & Restaurant in Bedford County, confirmed Thursday it's formally laid off the 88 employees who work there.

Because they're a concessioner of the National Park Service, they cannot operate the lodge while the federal government remains shutdown.

A spokesperson for the company says those employees will be eligible for unemployment after one week -- but they'll all be rehired as soon as the shutdown is over.

In the meantime, Delaware North Companies continues to work with guests whose stays were interrupted by the shutdown.

In a statement, the company says:

"Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts is working closely with the National Park Service at the locations where we operate as a result of the government shutdown. We hope for a quick resolution to this unfortunate situation. In the meantime, we are working with our guests to make alternative arrangements and will provide a refund to any guest who is not able to change his or her reservation."

276 employees who work at another operation in Luray were also laid off.
