RALEIGH, N.C. -

The winners of the second N.C. State Fair's Brewers' Cup beer competition were announced recently and the number of entries more than doubled since last year's competition.

"Flagship IPA" by the Chapel Hill-based Carolina Brewery won Best of Show in this year's Brewers' Cup. Another brew by Carolina Brewery, their "Sky Blue Golden Ale" won second-best overall. Durham's Fullsteam came in third place with their "First Frost Persimmon Ale."

The Brewers' Cup isn't just for the state's professional brewers, there's also a home-brewer competition. For the second year in a row, Chris Creech of Durham won Best of Show. His winning beer was a sour ale he named "Sprechen Deutsch."

Brian Quinn of Durham came in second overall with his "Vulcanalia Smoked Imperial Porter." Greg Wolfe of Raleigh placed third overall with his "Ooops I Drank Way Too Much of This Kolsch."

The competition featured 136 professional entries and 257 home-brew entries, the total number of entries was 122 percent more than last year's competition. Entries were evaluated in September by 31 professional judges.
