Governor drops by domestic violence event

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory says education and tougher laws designed to get abusers out of homes are key in battling domestic violence.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports (http://bit.ly/175YkoP ) that McCrory made the comments when he stopped by a domestic violence awareness event in Wilmington on Thursday evening.

Several hundred people gathered for the event in a park and McCrory was leaving a nearby business event when he saw the crowd and stopped by and spoke with participants. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

McCrory said that education, mental health and drug and alcohol counseling are important in battling domestic violence. He says tougher laws are needed to get abusers out of homes the first time there is a report of domestic violence.
