RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Wake Forest woman was struck and killed while standing outside of her disabled car on Interstate 540 Friday night.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Lauren Ann Gervig, 25, of Wake Forest, was waiting for help on the eastbound shoulder of I-540 near Six Forks Road when she was struck by a vehicle.

Gervig, who has a young daughter, was killed upon impact.

Troopers say the vehicle, driven by Paul Jago, was trying to merge, but failed to maintain lane control and struck her.

Jago was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. He bonded out of the Wake County Jail.
