RALEIGH, N.C. -

Volunteers came out Saturday to continue a facelift for the building that will become the new Urban Agriculture Training Center in southeast Raleigh.

About 25 volunteers working with Rebuilding Together of the Triangle manned the tools to demolish, build and prepare the 14,000-square-foot Hoke Street location.

Volunteers demolished damaged ceilings, built stairs for the community room and prepared the building for contractors to install heating and cooling, lighting and security systems.

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle will run the new facility.

Today's work was made possible by a $5,000 investment in materials and supplies from Honeywell.

"The community is going to have better access to healthy foods, fruits and vegetables that they can grow themselves," explained Jack Connell, with Honeywell.

Last year, the USDA listed southeast Raleigh as one of 171 so-called "food deserts" in North Carolina, meaning it lacked access to affordable and nutritious food.
