River Bend bicyclist still critical after Sunday accident

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. - A River Bend bicyclist is in critical condition after he was struck by an SUV on Sunday.

It happened Sunday around 4:15 p.m. near the Shell station on US 17 Business South.

Police say 52-year-old Kevin Wolfer was struck by 26-year-old Sandy Ekleberry of Trenton, N.C.

Witnesses told police Ekleberry’s SUV was heading south bound in the lane next to the center media divider. Wolfer was headed in the same direction on the shoulder area near the white fog line and attempted to cross both travel lanes when he was struck.

Officers say evidence at the scene indicates Ekleberry attempted to avoid the crash by braking and driving into the center median.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
