Chapel Hill middle school student helps other hospitalized kids

Posted: Updated:

As people packed part of Franklin Street in Chapel Hill Sunday for the annual Festifall, a middle school girl had a booth of her own aimed at helping others.

Leanne Joyce, 14, is president and founder of Positive Impact for Kids, a non-profit with the goal of improving the lives of kids getting medical treatment, by donating things such as i-Pads and gift cards.

Leanne started the organization two years ago and has donated to more than a dozen hospitals around the country. The organization purchase things off of pediatric children's wish lists.

Leanne has a heart condition, and when volunteers gave her a gift while in the hospital, she said it cut her anxiety, so she wanted to do the same for others.

"It's really stressful waiting for test results and to have something like this, it really helps take your mind off of it. You just feel normal again," she said.

Leanne's goal Sunday was $800. She collected about $10,000 in the past year.

She estimates her organization has helped about 50,000 kids because hospitals let many patients use each i-Pad.

By her high school graduation, she wants to have raised $100,000.
