RALEIGH, N.C. -

Students at approximately 80 elementary schools across North Carolina will walk or bike to school on Wednesday, Oct. 9, to celebrate International Walk to School Day, a global effort aimed at building awareness of the benefits of walking and bicycling.

The NCDOT tells 9 On Your Side a list of North Carolina events can be found at the International Walk to School Day website. These range from one-day celebrations to month-long activities that include pedestrian and bicycle education, walking and school bus programs, safety awareness campaigns and health and wellness promotions.

Jacksonville Commons Elementary School and Ridgewood Elementary school in Winterville are listed as participating schools on the website.

International Walk to School Day is supported by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. NCDOT’s Safe Routes to School program and Walk to School events share many of the same goals of creating safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizing the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, environmental concerns and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
