'Hiring Our Heroes' job fair held at Wake Tech

RALEIGH, N.C. -

More than 45 employers participated in a "Hiring Our Heroes" job fair Tuesday at Wake Tech giving hundreds a chance at a new career.

Veterans and their spouses attended the special job fair put on by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on the Northern Campus of Wake Technical Community College.

Some businesses like what veterans can bring to companies.

"They've had life experiences other people don't have," said Jim Moynihan with MHC Truck Leasing. "They generally don't get too flustered on a job because they've been in positions that you don't see on a day-to-day job like we have."

Some veterans said it was difficult to translate the skills they learned in the military to civilian jobs.

"You don't know what kind of jobs are available. A trucking company came up to me and pulled me out of the crowd," said Sean Mercilliott, a veteran of the Marine Corps. "It's something I would have never even known existed."

A lack of having a college degree is another obstacle some veterans face. Some lack confidence to apply for certain jobs due to their educational background.

Since Hiring Our Heroes began in March 2011, more than 1,200 companies have hired 20,200 veterans and military spouses as a result of more than 610 hiring fairs.

"They have the self-confidence to go and face the enemy on his ground," said Bob Melish, Wake Tech veteran coordinator. "They can come here and do this. It's that simple. We're here to help them.
