Man shoots bear in Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Wildlife officials are investigating the shooting of a bear by an Asheville man.

The man was working in his driveway Monday afternoon when a neighbor called to say a bear was headed toward his home. The man and his daughter went inside.

Wildlife officer Shawn Martin says the man came back out and shot the bear.

Martin says the bear was a female about a year and a half old, weighing about 150 pounds.

Some neighbors have complained about the shooting.

Martin says no charges have been filed but the investigation is continuing. He says the man could be charged with killing a bear out of season. That's a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a $4,000 fine and a loss of hunting privileges for two years.
