Wood defends pair of NC Medicaid audits

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - State Auditor Beth Wood is defending a pair of reports from her office this year critiquing financial practices within North Carolina's Medicaid agency and preparations to turn on a new Medicaid billing system.

Wood wrote to legislative leaders Thursday, two days after their oversight committee grilled Department of Health and Human Services leaders about the NCTracks system and Medicaid spending.

Wood stood by data in her review on Medicaid administrative costs that showed North Carolina was higher than other states, saying the numbers were reliable and came from federal regulators. A nonprofit news web site reported DHHS edited out of its response to the review other data showing North Carolina administrative costs were below average.

The auditor also said she earlier recommended DHHS officials re-evaluate starting NCTracks on July 1.
