Amazon coming to Hillsborough County

RUSKIN, FL (WFLA) -

More than a thousand jobs are coming to Hillsborough County, according to county commissioners.

Chairman Ken Hagan confirmed Thursday that internet retailer Amazon will open a distribution center in Ruskin. Hagan says 375 of the jobs created should pay more than $50,000 a year.

"This is a grand slam for Hillsborough County," he said.

Hagan received and e-mail Thursday morning confirming that real estate firm Ryan Companies closed on the sale of the land to insurance company USAA on Wednesday. Hagan confirmed USAA obtained a long-term lease with Amazon for the center of I-75 and State Road 674 in Ruskin.

Hagan says Amazon has been pretty quiet about the announcement.

"It's my understanding though that a significant amount of permits have already been pulled, that they're going to begin construction relatively soon and are literally going to work through the night 24/7 to get this distribution center up and running," he said.

The news comes during a promising year in terms of jobs creation. Hillsborough County and Tampa lead the state in creating new jobs. Three out of every ten jobs in the state have been created here in the last year, according to Hagan.
