Farm workers union convention hits North Carolina

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Farm labor activists are scheduled to meet in North Carolina to draw attention to the treatment of field workers.

The Farm Labor Organizing Committee says hundreds of delegates will meet in Durham on Friday as the group presses its work for fair wages and healthy working conditions for farmworkers.

The group is holding its convention in North Carolina rather than Ohio, where it has been held since 1967. FLOC says the struggles of migrant farm workers are more difficult in North Carolina and across the South.

The group has spent years demanding meetings with top executives of cigarette maker R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., saying the company has the economic power to force farm owners to improve working conditions for tens of thousands of tobacco farmworkers in the state.
