FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Cumberland County Sheriff's Detectives have arrested a former Fayetteville middle school principal and charged with sex crimes with boys at school.

David Ellis Edwards, 49, is charged with two counts of second-degree forcible sex offense, two counts of sexual acts with a student and five counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say there were at least three victims of these crimes.  All were committed at Ramsey Street Alternative and Douglas Byrd middle schools.

He resigned as principal at Douglas Byrd Middle School in August, only three weeks before school started. He had been principal at Douglas Byrd for three years. He was at Ramsey Street Alternative from August 2005 to April 2010.

Edwards' attorney said Edwards is not guilty.

The victims alleged that on or between the years of 2009 to 2011 they were touched inappropriately or were forced to participate in sexual acts with Edwards, according to authorities.

The victims, all males, were between the ages of 11 and 14 years.  On at least one occasion, the crimes were committed while a parent sat in a waiting area in the office of the school without knowing what was going on.

Edwards turned himself in Friday morning.

Edwards was processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center and released on a $140,000 unsecured bond.

Anyone with information, or who have been victimized are urged to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-15000

Edwards made a first appearance Friday in the Detention Center courtroom at 2:30 p.m. His next court date is Oct. 31.
