ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -

The sixth annual Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down, presented by the City of Rocky Mount, will be held in front of the Train Station in Downtown Rocky Mount on Fri., Oct. 11, 2013 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sat., Oct. 12, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The weekend of festivities will include a BBQ Competition, BBQ food vendors, a live performance from The Embers, kid’s activities, a Corn Hole Tournament and much more.

Sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, this year’s BBQ Competition will include 56 teams along the east coast, from New Jersey to Georgia, and one team from Colorado. There will be four categories in the competition, including chicken, ribs, pork and beef brisket. The BBQ Competition, open to any BBQ professional, will result in a Grand Champion winning a prize of $5,000. According to Debbie Julio, the City of Rocky Mount’s Special Events Coordinator, aside from the Grand Champion, there are additional opportunities to win cash and prizes.

“By the end of the BBQ Throw Down, over $20,000 will be awarded to participants, because there are 53 opportunities to win,” says Julio. “A favorite contest of attendees is the Pepsi’s People’s Choice Award where the public gets to participate through purchased ballots. This contest will be held on Sat., Oct. 12, 2013 from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.”

Julio says that BBQ cooking professionals are not the only winners at this year’s BBQ Throw Down. Attendees may win too. A Corn Hole Tournament sponsored by Rocky Mount Public Utilities will be held on Fri., Oct. 11, 2013 on the corner of Hammond and S. Church Streets. The tournament begins at 6 p.m. for your chance to win up to $300.

All proceeds from the tournament will go towards the Winter Assistance for Rocky Mount (WARM) Program. On Sat., Oct. 12, 2013 play Plinko at the Public Utilities Booth located at the corner of Nash and S. Church Streets. A lucky winner will receive $100 off of their utility bill.

Entertainment will be prevalent at the annual festival, with The Embers kicking off the first of a few live performances. Known for beach music, the Embers have solidified their place in the music industry and throughout the South. They are also known as North Carolina’s Official Ambassadors of Music.

Expect a performance from The Embers on Fri., Oct. 11, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Sat., Oct. 12, 2013 the Main Event Band will provide entertainment from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., and catch the Holiday Band from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“This is my favorite time of the year,” says Julio. “And, the BBQ Throw Down is something you don’t want to miss. Friday night is going to be great with The Embers, and you’ll start to see smoke in the air as the competitors begin cooking for the contest. On Saturday, you have to come out and taste some of the best barbecue you’ll ever have. There is just so much to do for the whole family.”

The other activities Julio referenced consist of the King BMX Stunt Show, returning to the Eastern Carolina BBQ Thrown Down, with shows on Sat., Oct. 12, 2013 at 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. These shows will be held in the Station Square parking lot.

BBQ food vendors and other food vendors will be available during the entire BBQ Throw Down weekend. There will also be kids’ activities, including inflatables, pony rides, table games, video games and much more.
