Pink ribbon doesn't always mean money

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Frances Deering, a bay area cancer survivor, says she whole heartedly supports cancer research. But you won't catch her donating to the cause, without investigating first.

"What I usually do is ask how much goes to the charity," Deering said. "It's disappointing but I know a lot of times some of the money goes to administrative costs and not research."

Bryan Oglesby, with the Better Business Bureau in Clearwater, says Deering is smart to get her facts straight.

"The pink ribbon is not regulated by any agency so companies can use it freely," Oglesby said. "Maybe the company just supports cancer awareness and doesn't give money."

Oglesby says a lot of companies have "caps" on donations.

"The cap may be filled. Even if you're buying the pink products, no more money is going to the charity if the cap is filled."

The Better Business Bureau recommends doing your research. That can be as simple as looking up the company website or even asking in the store.
