5 farm workers rescued after trapped in grain silo

CAMDEN, N.C. - Five North Carolina farm workers have been rescued from a grain silo after being buried up to their necks in corn.

The Virginian-Pilot reported Monday (http://bit.ly/165JkgD ) Camden County firefighters freed the men from a silo on George Wood Farms near Camden.

Three workers were trapped in the silo around noon. Two-would be rescuers tried to help and found themselves also trapped in the corn, which can behave like quicksand.

Rescuers were lowered into the silo with harnesses to vacuum out the grain. The last worker was pulled out about 4:30 p.m.

Camden County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lauren Copeland said all five workers are in good condition after being transported to Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City.
