New team to battle gang violence in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Wilmington police and New Hanover County sheriff's deputies are creating a new team to battle gang violence.

Leaders of the agencies announced Monday that 32 members of each agency will make up a new team that will work around the clock to fight gang violence.

District Attorney Ben David says the partnership is only part of the battle against gang violence. He says families and neighbors need to stop worrying about providing information to investigators about gang activities.

County commission chairman Woody White says there's already money in the sheriff's department budget for the program. Wilmington City Council will consider a $140,000 grant for an additional city gang investigation unit at their next meeting.
