Nearly 100 rescued animals arrive at NC shelter

GREENSBORO, N.C. -

Nearly 100 animals rescued from a home in Pender County last week have arrived at the Guilford County Animal Shelter.

The shelter's trauma center is dealing with 56 dogs, 41 chickens and a goat, The News & Record of Greensboro reported.

Shelter executive director Marsha Williams says many of the dogs need eye or ear surgery. Many of the dogs also have dental and grooming problems.

"It looks like it is glued to their skin," said Williams, "so you have to have good skills or you end up cutting them."

She says some of the chickens have raw hides from lost feathers. She thinks they were cooped up in a very small space.

Williams said she could not talk about the raid or the specifics in the case because the investigation is continuing.

But she said she's seen animals similar to these that have been sold to unsuspecting buyers.

"You could clean these up and tie a pretty ribbon around them and sell them for big dollars," Williams said, pointing to several smaller dogs. "It's when (the buyers) get to the vet that they see all kinds of problems."
