CARTHAGE, N.C. -

The head coach of the Union Pines High School boys' soccer team has been charged with multiple counts of sexual exploitation involving a minor.

James Kevin Hayes, 48, of Carthage, is charged with 10 counts of felony second degree sexual exploitation of a minor and 10 count of felony third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

The Moore County Sheriff's Office was notified Tuesday by the FBI regarding an undercover investigation into the distribution of child pornography. As a result of the joint investigation, Hayes was arrested Wednesday in Carthage.

Hayes is being held in the Moore County Detention Center under a $2,000,000 bond.

Hayes has been a high school coach for 14 years, having coached at Pinecrest, Overhills and Union Pines. Most recently, Union Pines named him the head boys' coach earlier this year.

As a result of the charges, Hayes is no longer an employee of Moore County Schools, the school system said.

"This is an unacceptable and unfortunate situation that was addressed swiftly and appropriately by the school district and law enforcement," Moore County Schools said. "We assure you the safety and well-being of our students is our first priority."

Prior to being named the Union Pines coach, Hayes was the Overhills High School girls' soccer coach for four seasons and the boys' head soccer coach for three seasons.

He coached the Union Pines girls' soccer team in 2008.
