You Ask, We Answer: Free phones in Greenville

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - People on government assistance in Greenville are getting free phones.

People lined up with their photo ID and public assistance benefit card on 5th and Memorial.

The program’s called “Lifeline,” but it became famous as through a viral online video and political spin through the name “The Obama-phone.”

A witness there even gave credit for the program to President Obama.

"Pretty much it's part of the Obama plan so everybody who gets benefits are entitled to a free phone," said Devro Delk of Access Wireless

We looked into it and found out the program is administered by the FCC and President George W. Bush actually started the specific cell phone distribution from grants.
