Well Care Health Plans Inc. announced on Thursday they were laying off about 115 people in Florida, according to the company's Vice President of Corporate Communications Jack Maurer.

Maurer said that the company was streamlining several departments, because of changes in requirements of federal and state government programs. He said nationwide, about three percent of the company's workforce has been affected.

Maurer said that the company expects to add about 500 new jobs in Florida, if they get contract awards with Florida's Agency for Healthcare Administration as part of the state's Managed Medical Assistance (MMA) program. He said that these positions are completely different than the positions eliminated on Thursday.

WellCare was previously investigated by the federal government for healthcare fraud.
