Fidelity opens office in RTP as employees volunteer at middle school

DURHAM, N.C. -

Fidelity Investments celebrated the grand opening of its new facility in the Research Triangle Park on Thursday, with Gov. Pat McCrory and Durham Mayor Bill Bell there for the ribbon cutting.

And while it was the building's grand opening, many of the employees were not in the office.Instead, the company celebrated their growth by helping out a local school.

More than 300 volunteers boarded onto buses and helped transform Lowe's Grove Middle School.

"That means more than anything, that you're going to convert this day to a service day for the employees," said McCrory.

"The number of volunteers is spectacular and we really appreciate the opportunity to get out in the community and give back," said Steve Shutlz, and employee volunteer.

The group helped build an amphitheater and construct a nature trail. The volunteers also worked on landscaping, set up science experiments with the kids, painted murals, built cabinets, and much more.

"It's so important that children understand that adults take interest in them and we take the time to come out and show them that and make an impact in their lives," said Jackie Benston, another employee volunteer.

Community service is nothing new for this group - last year alone they spent 5000 hours giving back to the community.

"It feels really good when you can sit down with a group of people and know you're doing something for work, but when you can also get together with that same group of people and know that you're making an impact in the community," said Benston.

Fidelity Investments has grown to more than 3,600 employees in North Carolina and is now one of the largest employees in the RTP.
