RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina State University is on the cutting edge of moving 3D printing forward by opening the doors to its impressive lab, which could be the future of manufacturing, auto parts and even medicine.

As a puppy, Jack had his back legs chewed off by another dog. But thanks to 3D printing at N.C. State, he took his first steps with prosthetic implants.

A few weeks later, Jack is up and running around -- as energetic as any dog with four of its own legs.

Jack's is just one of dozens of stories coming out of the university's multi-million dollar 3D printing lab in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

While man's best friend as benefited from the hip implants printed in N.C. State's lab, researcher Tim Horn said there are few people who have benefited from 3D printed implants due to FDA restrictions.

"I can do these very complex structures," Horn pointed out. "Mesh can be built right into the part."

The school is now inviting manufacturing experts from across the state to tour the lab and to help direct future research in 3D printing while N.C. State students reap the benefits.

"It's going to be a very powerful tool in the engineer's tool box," Horn explained. "And our students are going to be very prepared for that."

Horn said he can even custom print an implant designed to fit a specific person.
