S.C. mayor under fire for using 'queer' in post

Posted: Updated:
WEST UNION, S.C. -

The mayor of a small South Carolina mountain town is under fire after her Facebook post criticizing a decision allowing gay couples to apply for marriage licenses.

Mayor Linda Oliver used the word "queer" in a posting objecting to the register of deeds in Buncombe County, N.C., allowing gay couples to apply for marriage licenses Tuesday.

The post said God would now bless such unions. It has since been deleted. Oliver has apologized and said she will use the word "homosexual" in the future.

"All I can say is if people want to crucify me that's fine," she said. "I know that following Jesus, I'm going to be crucified."

Now, a new Facebook page seeks her ouster as the mayor of the town of about 300 in rural Oconee County.

The page, "Recall West Union S.C. Mayor Linda Oliver" joined Facebook the same day as Oliver's post. The new page had 866 "likes" late Friday.

But Oliver says the Facebook page hurts her as well.

"What I'm emotional about is because of my feelings," she said. "The way I feel toward homosexuals is how I've been brought up."
