The Coast Guard says it’s investigating a reported call to rescue 7 people from a sinking boat this weekend as a possible hoax.

It happened Sunday just before 3 a.m. near Beaufort, N.C.

A Fort Macon Coast Guard official tells 9 On Your Side the reported distressed boat was apparently near Highway 101 near the Core Creek Bridge and carrying five adults and two children. Listen to the call for help.

But officials say the search was suspended around 10 a.m. after finding no sign of the boat or the boaters.

As part of this investigation, the agency is seeking the public’s assistance to identify the caller or provide additional information about what may have happened that night.

The Coast Guard, Atlantic Beach Fire Department, Morehead City Fire Department,  "Pedro" Search and Rescue crews all responded the call.
