Storm Team 9 explains the science behind hurricane season

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

So far, the Atlantic Hurricane Season hasn't lived up to its billing.  Take a look at the numbers:  Only two hurricanes have formed in the Atlantic Ocean so far this year and neither has been a major - Category 3 or greater.

So, what's the science behind the lack of hurricanes this year?  Experts say that upper level winds have been stronger than expected, which tends to tear apart developing tropical systems.  Also, a combination of dry air and dust from western Africa off the Sahara Desert can also suppress hurricane development.

However, with six weeks remaining in the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season, there's still plenty of time for storms to develop.

It only takes one storm to make it a devastating season.

Stay with Storm Team 9 as we continue to track the tropics through the rest of hurricane season, which officially lasts through November 30th.
