Report: Majority of low income students in the South

Posted: Updated:

Public school students from low income families are fast becoming the majority in our state and across the South.

A new report by the Southern Education Foundation finds that 50 percent or more of students in public schools below the Mason-Dixon line participate in free or reduced lunch programs which is how the study defines low income.

North Carolina is 16th out of the 50 states.

The Southern region tops the charts when looking back at the 2009-2010 enrollment data.

Mississippi currently has the most students on free or reduced lunch at 71 percent.

The foundation also draws connections to stagnant test scores for these students and little to no increases in school funding.
