Caught on Tape: Drooling driver awakens, causes 5-car crash, flees scene

ATLANTA - A driver is wanted after he was was caught on camera causing a multi-car crash and then fleeing the scene in Atlanta.

News cameras caught the whole thing on tape as the man behind the wheel of a pickup truck was spotted slumped over and stopped in the middle of the road before the wreck.

"He's either drunk or very sick. Something is clearly wrong with him," a caller told 911.

Atlanta-area reporter Liz Artz, with WSB-TV, called 911 after she passed the Dodge Pickup truck on the Buford Connector Saturday afternoon. The truck was stopped in a lane of traffic with the driver slumped over and drooling.

"He stopped in the middle of the road blocking traffic," Artz said.

Other drivers spotted the man as well.

"Something was not right about him," one witness said.

A Georgia Department of Transportation HERO unit at the scene tried to wake the man and take his keys. They got into a scuffle and the driver took off, nearly hitting the HERO worker.

The truck smashed into two cars causing a chain reaction that resulted in a five car accident.

Michael McKinnon's BMW was in the middle of it all.

"It was really scary and I just looked over and made sure Erica was OK," McKinnon said.

The HERO worker made another attempt to stop the man. He actually managed to get the key out of the truck as the driver ran off. The man climbed a tree and jumped over a barbed wire fence. Police arrived a short time later.

Police still haven't found the driver. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in the accident.
