Department of Public Safety Commissioner Gregory K. Baker has named a career law enforcement professional, Bernard W. (B.W.) Collier II, as director of Alcohol Law Enforcement effective Oct. 24.

“B.W. Collier is a great addition to the DPS law enforcement family,” Baker said.  “I have complete confidence in his ability to lead ALE’s Alcoholic Beverage Control and narcotics enforcement efforts.”

The NC Department of Public Safety tells 9 On Your Side that Collier was director and special agent in charge of the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center, a section within the Department of Justice.

Collier began working for the State Bureau of Investigation in 1987 as a special agent.  During the next 26 years at the SBI, he also served as a drug investigator, pilot, an arson and crime scene agent, canine handler, a technical agent and a bomb squad commander.  He currently serves as special agent in charge of the SBI’s criminal intelligence unit and as director of NC ISAAC.

NC ISAAC, also the state’s fusion center, partners with local, state and federal law enforcement to exchange and analyze homeland security information.  They tell us as director, Collier was responsible for such duties as establishing goals, providing investigative oversight to law enforcement, supervising intelligence analysts and managing grants. As special agent in charge, he was responsible for providing strategic and tactical intelligence and investigative assistance to the law enforcement community.

Collier, a North Carolina native, served in the N.C. Army National Guard from 1983 to 1989 and comes from a family of state employees.  His father is a retired State Highway Patrol lieutenant, and his mother is a retired school teacher.  Collier is married and has two grown children.

“I am humbled by the opportunity and am looking forward to working with DPS as well as all state and local agencies,” said Collier.  “I’ve worked with ALE over the years in different events, and I’ve always been impressed by their professionalism and strong work ethic.”
