Dare County inmates charged for medicine

MANTEO, N.C. (AP) - Dare County has started charging jail inmates $10 for prescription medicines.

North Carolina lawmakers in August authorized jail administrators to charge up to $20 for medical treatment.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported (http://bit.ly/H1KvST) that Dare County commissioners approved the prescription fee earlier this month.

North Carolina prisons charge $5 for medical treatment and prescriptions. Eddie Caldwell with the North Carolina Sheriff's Association says the fee for jail inmates are intended to curb abuse and require inmates to be responsible for their care.

Dare jail administrator Capt. Kathryn Bryan says 15 of the 80 inmates in the jail take prescription medicine. The jail spent about $14,000 on prescriptions last year. The fee is expected to generate about $3,500.

Indigent inmates do not have to pay the fee.
