Morrisville clearing way for guns on playgrounds

MORRISVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The Wake County town of Morrisville has cleared the way for concealed weapons permit holders to carry guns on playgrounds.

But not everyone is happy about the move.

The council voted Tuesday to comply with a new state law that allows those with permits to carry concealed weapons on playgrounds, greenways and college campuses.

Sarah Sidney asked council members to do everything they could to keep guns off playgrounds, saying she worries about accidents.

But William Smith said concealed weapons carriers are responsible. Smith says violent incidents are more likely where there are signs that ban concealed weapons. He says no-gun signs tell people that victims are available.

The council did vote to restrict concealed weapons on sports fields during town-sponsored events, which is allowed under the new law.
