GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Public universities post the smallest annual percentage increase in tuition since 1975.

The average cost of tuition and fees jumped less than 3%. That’s a dramatic slowdown from the annual 8% increase typical over the past few decades.

However, East Carolina University didn’t help the average. Tuition and fees for the pirates went up more than 4.5%. The good news for ECU families is the university still costs less than the average 4 year degree.

This semester cost $6,143 while the national average is around $8,900.
