U.S. Representative C.W. "Bill" Young remembered

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Thousands of family members, friends, lawmakers and constituents descended on the First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks in Largo, to remember U.S. Representative C. W. 'Bill Young. They gathered to pay tribute to a man who served as a lawmaker for more than 4 decades. U.S. Senator Bill Nelson says Young was unlike many modern day politicians, who follow party lines to a fault.

"Bill Young represented the kind of person that would reach out, respect the other fellow, and then work out the differences in a bipartisan way." Said Nelson. "What a contrast to what we're seeing today where it's so ideologically driven and so partisan and I think the reflection of the life and the public service of Bill Young is going to make us all think. "Young was also known for his tireless work with military veterans, a number of whom showed up at this afternoon's service.

Randall McNabb remembers contacting Young's office in the early 70's after he served in Vietnam. He was enrolled in junior college, but his GI funding wasn't coming through. Young fixed the problem. McNabb remembers that gesture to this day. "Well, it meant a lot that I could actually have someone have my back a little bit, you know." Said McNabb. "Like I say, I was straight out of the service, trying to start up a new life, "

Young's family members arrived at the church just as his body arrived. His son, Bill Junior says they are overwhelmed by the support from the community as a whole. "We got tears in our eyes when we saw the firefighters had flown the flags and we saw the motorcycle guard going to get him and he has the patriot riders over here which he absolutely loved." Said the Young's son. "It's wonderful, and again, if anyone deserves it, he deserves it. In life, he was not a flashy guy, so I'm glad that he's getting this big sendoff. "
