Landing gear problem forces Craven County airplane to turn around

NEW BERN, N.C. -

Passengers at a local airport had some scary moments in the air Friday morning.

An airplane at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport in New Bern had to turn around and bring all the passengers back because of landing gear problems.

Passengers say it was U.S. Airways flight 4303, that left for Charlotte around 7 AM.

Airport director Tom Braaten says about 30 minutes into the flight, the pilot turned around after something indicated that the landing gear wasn't going up.

Passengers say the problem put them on edge.

"[I felt] a little nervous, sure," said passenger Sarah Afflerbach. "The Dash 8s, it's almost like getting on a bus, but they seemed pretty reliable. Haven't really had any problems before."

Braaten says maintenance staff will check the airplane to determine how the problem happened.

The flight was rescheduled for several hours later, said passengers.
