NC State Fair attendance down after accident

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Attendance has dropped at the North Carolina State Fair after a carnival ride accident that left five injured.

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says attendance at the fair Friday night was just over 82,000. That's more than 10,000 fewer people than the same night last year.

Friday was the first full day after an accident on the "Vortex," a ride known for its wild twirls and flips.

Officials say the accident happened after the ride started up again as riders were getting off late Thursday. The injured riders range in age from 14 to 39.

State labor inspectors are investigating. The ride is closed for the duration of the fair, which ends Sunday.
