New information on Giles Co. officer-involved shooting

Posted: Updated:
PEARISBURG, VA -

After more than 24 hours with very little new information, police are now answering a lot of questions about the officer-involved shooting that happened in Pearisburg Saturday evening.

They say a special agent with the State Police was working together with the Giles County Sheriff's Office on an investigation into a robbery and shooting that happened early Friday morning.

Just after 4 p.m. officers saw the main suspect, 32 year old Jonathan Robertson, of Narrows. Police say he had stopped his pickup truck across Fletchers Mountain Road in Narrows, forcing the officers to stop. When they identified themselves as police, Robertson pulled out a weapon and began shooting. Both officers began to shoot back.

Robertson then got in his car and took off, stopping again to shoot at police after running over a spike strip that flattened his tires.

After exchanging gunfire with police, he left the scene again. Police continued to chase him until he ran off the road on Thomas Drive in Pearisburg, next to Newberry Ford. Once again he exchanged gunfire with police.

Robertson was taken to Giles Memorial Hospital and was then flown to Roanoke Memorial, where he died shortly thereafter.

Police say there was a passenger in the vehicle who bailed out of the pickup truck and ran away from the initial incident at Fletchers Mountain Road. This person was not injured and has been taken into police custody. He's currently being held without bond on charges related to Friday's robbery and shooting incident.

No officers were hurt at any of the shooting scenes.

State Police, along with the Giles County Sheriff's Office and Town of Pearisburg Police are still investigating. We will continue following this story and bring you the latest information as it comes into our newsroom.
